He’s still singing, and not the blues, even though he was cut from the top 24 finalists. He talked to Tanna about fist bumping the Daawg and what it did to him when J-Lo walked into the room.

When I heard the news this week that Phil Collins is walking away from the music industry it made me realize that this might be a great topic for my very first blog since I’ve been here at 98.1 KUDL.

I was a huge Phil Collins  fan early on.  I had enjoyed Genesis…but adored Phil Collins.  His first album “Face Values” came at a time in my life when I could almost believe he was singing about parts of my life.   That album had meant a lot to me.  Well in 1996 when he was touring to promote his “Dance Into The Light” album  I was lucky enough to have tickets to the show and a backstage pass.  There was no “meet and greet” with Phil so it didn’t mean a chance to meet him, but my date and I were backstage to meet with the record rep and some other radio folks.  Fortunately for me…we got lost in the halls under Kemper arena!  Next thing I know we are walking right up to Phil Collins and his security guard!  In my moment of being totally star struck I rambled on and on about his album “Face Values” and he laughed and said “that was so long ago I hardly even remember the songs.”  I continued to gush that those songs meant so much to me and that I had listened to them over and over and I was such a fan….and whatever other stupid stuff one says when they are totally flustered.  He was very polite, very pleasant and told me he hoped I enjoyed the show and then he was gone.  Did I get an autograph?  No.  Did I make a memorable impression?  No.  Did I sound pretty stupid talking to him about an album from years before when he was focused on his new one?  Yeah, probably.

So the moral to my story is…when you finally meet someone you really want to meet, I hope you handle it better than I did!  I’m not sorry though.   It’s not like you ever really get a chance to make any astounding impression on any big name star.  Just a quick hello and maybe thanks!  And I am really glad he was so approachable and so nice.

Phil Collins has decided to walk away from the music business due in part to his health.  He had some vertabrae damage in his neck and even after surgery he really can’t use his hands well enough to play the drums or the piano.  He also suffered hearing loss.  But he isn’t ill.  He is 60 and feeling fine from what he says.  The other reason he has decided to leave is because music reviewers have been so unkind for the last several years.  He especially took a lot of flack for his music for the Disney movie “Tarzan”.  Reviewers have affected him so strongly that when he announced his retirement he actually apologized for his music saying “sorry it was all so successful.”    He went on to say he didn’t think he would be missed.  Well Mr. Collins, I for one, will miss you!  Karen
