The author of “Free Range Kids” advocates dropping your pre-teen kids off at the park and leaving them there alone, to teach them independence.  It seems like a scary thing to do but I remember, as a kid, roaming the state forest behind my house.  I’d be gone for hours and my parents never worried, even though there was a  state penal farm in the forest. As long as I was home by supper, it was all good.

  1. I agree that the world is a dangerous place. But kids really need to learn to deal with the world they live in all thru their childhood. Cutting them loose in their teens is not a benefit to anyone. We as parents must teach and explain why. It takes a more time but my son is confident and knows how to deal with alot of real world situations. I’m still scared but I have faith.
